School Food Program:
We continue to work with OUSD Food Service to try to get as much seasonal, fresh and local produce into all school meals and eliminate highly processed foods, realizing current budgetary and logistical constraints. We are also working to minimize food waste and landfill waste associated with school food service. We have helped to develop a comprehensive Wellness Policy, adopted by the OUSD School Board in 2006 that helps guide school food service, physical education, and other aspects of school life to promote healthy choices for our students. In the past, Food For Thought worked with OUSD Food Service to sponsor a once-a-week salad bar meal featuring fresh, local, seasonal produce. Despite its popularity among students, parents and teachers, the salad bar was discontinued in the Fall of 2008 by OUSD Food Service, citing budgetary constraints.
