Garden Club Update: A Taste of Something New 🍉🌶️
This week at Garden Club, you’ll notice a few fresh updates blooming alongside the fall veggies. Our signs have been refreshed to reflect the week’s activities—look out for the new QR codes that link to recipes, reflections, and more. It’s a small way to keep our garden growing in both flavor and connection.

Instead of journals this year, our young gardeners are invited to write the recipe for each day’s taste test. It’s a playful shift from reflection to creation—giving kids the chance to document what they made, tasted, and shared. This week’s recipe is a vibrant one:

Watermelon and Homemade Tajín Snack
– Slice fresh watermelon and remove the rind
– Squeeze lime over the slices
– Sprinkle a pinch of salt
– Add a dash of chili powder
– Enjoy the sweet, spicy, tangy delight!

Food for Thought staff member Gloria shared her excitement about leading this week’s tasting experience.
The kids will first taste the sweet watermelon, then they’re invited to try it with sour (lime), then salty (salt), then spice (chili). That way, they get to experience a whole spectrum of sensations at the taste test table.  It’s more than a snack—it’s a sensory adventure. Each layer invites curiosity and courage, helping kids explore how flavors interact and transform.
Did you know?
– Watermelon is 92% water, making it one of the most hydrating fruits around. It’s also packed with vitamin C and antioxidants like lycopene.
– Tajín (the seasoning) was created in Mexico in the 1980s and is named after the ancient city of El Tajín. It’s often sprinkled on fruit, veggies, and even popcorn!
– Combining salt and lime with fruit isn’t just tasty—it can enhance flavor perception and help kids explore new taste profiles.

We’d love for you to try this recipe at home! Whether it’s a solo snack or a shared moment with family, let us know how it goes. Did your kids like the spice? Did you add your own twist? Snap a photo, jot a note, or just tell us what you think—we’re always eager to hear how the garden grows beyond our gates.

Go have fun in the garden!🌱
